In this trial, the effects of two feeds were compared: a commercial organic seabass feed and a feed that included 12% krill meal. Both diets were nutritionally balanced and certified for organic production. Over the 12-week trial period, the krill-fed group maintained growth performance on par with fish fed high levels of organic fishmeal.
But the real test came when the fish were hit with an outbreak of vibriosis, caused by Vibrio harveyi. While both groups experienced losses due to the absence of antibiotic treatments, the difference in gut health was striking. When examined under the microscope, the krill-fed fish had an intact intestinal structure and reduced inflammation, while the control group suffered from severe enteritis and villi damage, which can lead to poor digestion.
A previously conducted trial with gilthead seabream showed that a diet containing 10% krill meal, combined with a phytogenic additive, helped fish recover faster from infections caused by Enteromyxum leei, a parasite known for damaging the gut lining and impairing nutrient uptake. Within just a month, krill-fed fish showed strong tissue restoration and reduced inflammatory response.
These effects are tied to krill meal’s unique nutritional profile, including phospholipid-bound omega-3s (EPA and DHA), astaxanthin, and marine proteins.
