With climate change driving more frequent heatwaves, cold-water species like rainbow trout face mounting stress. Dr. Tufan Eroldoğan, from Cukurova University and founder of Aquaspin Lda, presents research on krill meal (KM) as a nutritional tool to boost trout resilience.
His study tested KM at 0%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% under rising temperatures (14°C to 23°C), revealing improved growth, survival, and strong cellular responses at higher KM levels. Rich in phospholipids, n-3 PUFAs, and key amino acids, krill meal shows promise for future-proofing aquaculture against climate stress.

Led by Dr. Kiranpreet Kaur, it highlights the untapped potential and future research opportunities for krill-based nutrition beyond salmonids.

Dr. Stéphanie Fontagné, senior research scientist at INRAE, will share new insights into how krill meal supplementation enhances the resilience of rainbow trout under hypoxic stress — a growing challenge in aquaculture. Rich in antioxidants, krill meal improves growth, fillet quality, and stress tolerance, especially in low oxygen conditions. Her research highlights its potential to support fish welfare and performance amid climate-driven environmental pressures.
