How Will the Growth in Fish Consumption Impact the Breeding of Fish?

Blog overview

With the worldwide consumption of fish continuing to grow, driven by ever increasing demand in developing countries, breeders are required to produce larger fish, in even less time. Combine that with the obvious need to ensure harvested fish are also healthy and free from disease, and the stress on breeders can be significant.

But there is a solution, and it comes in the form of a healthy, incredibly efficient fish feed made from whole, freshly caught and dried Antarctic krill.

How will this growth impact the breeders?

Bigger, better fish, shorter time

With consumption expected to rise to 21,8kg per capita by 2025, according to the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture Report 2016, finding more efficient ways to harvest fish will become a business necessity for breeders. Diet is a key way to improve efficiency, with the inclusion of Antarctic krill proven by a number of studies to be the optimal feed for harvested fish.

Shown to increase appetite and feed intake over conventional fishmeal, growth rates and final body rates are vastly improved, with fish fed QRILL Aqua growing between 10 to 25 percent faster. Offering shorter production times, in addition the fillet quality of fish fed krill meal, rich in phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, is much improved. Firmer, of better quality and of course much more abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, the direct benefits to both breeders and consumers are obvious.

Healthier fish, healthy business

With a number of challenging health issues now a constant threat to the aquaculture business, choosing high-quality, healthy fish feed is more important than ever. Offering the potential to reduce mortality rates, and by extension improve financial performance, making the right feed choice has a direct effect on the bottom line.

Investing heavily in research, in order to improve our understanding of the diseases and issues affecting farmed fish, QRILL Aqua is proven to be enormously beneficial for their health. Studies show that fish fed krill meal develop stronger heart muscles and healthier circulatory systems, resulting in lower mortality rates and less incidents of disease. In addition, as krill meal has an ideal balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, fish experience reduced inflammation and are more tolerant to stress.
